Riflemen are with you from the beginning of the game. They have decent Hitpoints and damage. The best part about them is that they require the least amount of space on your landing craft of any troop.
They are most effective when deployed in large numbers and following heavies. Using heavies to take the aggro from your opponents defense is a great strategy. Give enough distance between deploying the Heavies then the Riflemen. If the Riflemen follow too close they are likely to be taken out by rocket launchers, machine guns and mortars.
